Posy Simmonds has long reigned as perhaps Britain's greatest observational cartoonist and writer. A long career furnishing cartoons for the Guardian resulted in 1999's Gemma Bovery,her sophisticated and witty middle class take on Flaubert's novel: the later Tamara Drewe and the recent Cassandra Darke mined similar social tropes. Simmonds has also enjoyed success as a children's author,notably for 1987's Fred.
